Background history on the USS Arizona
Built in the 1910s in honour of the 48th state’s recent admission into the union, the USS Arizona battleship was the last of the Pennsylvania-class of “Super Dreadnoughts.” During World War I, though operational, the vessel remained stateside; it was, however, one of a number of ships to transport President Woodrow Wilson to the Paris Peace Conference after the conflict. Most memorably, of course, the USS Arizona was struck and sank during the Japanese bombing at Pearl Harbor, killing 1,177 American officers and crewmen.
